Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition
Amazon/CNET

For years, many people have clamored for a color version of Amazon's popular Kindle e-readers, as it consistently tops our list of best e-readers. In 2024, Amazon finally came through with the Kindle Colorsoft.

It takes the best things about the Kindle, like the incredibly lightweight and portable form factor, backlit e-ink screen and the Kindle Store, and puts it all in color. Now you can see your book covers in color, read magazines in their full glory, and read all those comics and graphic novels in color too. Right now, you can get a great price on the Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition during the Amazon Spring Sale. It's only $225, which is $55 off the regular price of $280.

The Amazon Kindle Colorwhite has a similar overall chassis design and weight to the popular Kindle Paperwhite. Like the Paperwhite, the Colorsoft has an IPX8 rating, so you can actually submerge it in water and it will be perfectly fine. So yes, the Colorsoft is safe to take to the tub so you can read the Invincible comics while enjoying your bubble bath. The 7-inch e-ink screen is now equipped with a Kaledio color filter, which makes color viewing possible, and it still has an adjustable backlight and glare-free display.

There is a slight catch behind the color part of the Colorsoft, however. While the Colorsoft has a 300 ppi monotone display like the other Kindles, that is cut in half when you switch to the color mode, so it's only 150ppi. This means there is a smidge less crispness when viewing in color. On the other hand, the color will bring more life into your comics, graphic novels and magazines. If you're also the type to highlight text while reading, this also means that you can use and see different colors for the highlighter too.

Curated discounts worth shopping while they last

The Amazon Kindle Colorsoft isn't the only color e-reader out there, but it does have access to the Kindle Store. If you have Amazon Prime, you can also access Prime Reading and even Kindle Unlimited if you subscribe to that, too. All of these are great options for discovering new titles to read, especially with 32GB of internal storage. As far as battery life, a single charge should last up to eight weeks, and it uses USB-C for charging.

Why this deal matters

One of the concerns about the Colorsoft when it first launched was the price was a little high, which makes this sale a particularly good one. If you gawked at the $280 sticker price, then slicing $55 off that makes this a little easier to swallow. The Colorsoft is also a much better choice if you tend to read a lot of comics, graphic novels or magazines. Otherwise, the color screen doesn't offer anything new if you are only reading basic books, in which case the regular Kindle or Kindle Paperwhite may be a better choice.
