How we sort our mattresses

Your bed is one of the most important items in your house. We spend roughly a third of our lives sleeping, so being comfortable is essential. Luxury mattresses are more expensive than the average bed, but if you can afford it, they're worth it.

I’ve tested and reviewed dozens of mattresses, and many of my favorites fall into the luxury category. These mattresses are hefty, high-quality and exceptionally comfortable. I used my testing (and sleeping) experience to round up the best luxury mattresses worth your money.

What is the overall best luxury mattress?

The CNET sleep team has tested around 300 mattresses during our time rolling around beds for a living. We determined that the Leesa Sapria Chill is the best overall luxury mattress because it has an accommodating, responsive pillow top feel, breathable foams and durable construction.

A queen Leesa Sapria Chill mattress will cost you $2,159. It’s not the most expensive bed on the list, though it’s certainly not a budget choice. The good news is that the price can drop well under $2,000 with sales. I’ve seen it priced around $1,700.

Best luxury mattress in 2025

8.8

Our take: The Lessa Sapria Chill mattress has a quiet luxury that appeals to almost every type of sleeper. From the quilted top to the 1,032 individually wrapped coils, I think it’s a good bet for any person. However, hot sleepers shouldn’t expect a ton of cooling power with this bed.

How it sleeps: “The new Sapira Chill mattress is a pretty big departure for Leesa, who hadn’t made a pillow-top mattress before. Leesa nailed it. This bed has everything for someone looking for a luxurious mattress with a pleasing aesthetic, accommodating feel, a cooling cover and the ability to pick and choose your firmness profile. I spoke to the brand lead of Leesa about this bed, and she said they designed the Sapira Chill based on customer feedback and that the reception has been very positive,” says Owen Poole, senior video producer.

The Leesa Sapria Chill has a wicked comfy pillow top. That’s the main feeling I get when I lie on this bed, something that most people relate to. It’s light and fluffy and gives you plenty of pressure relief.

That’s not to say this bed isn’t supportive. The support comes from the individually wrapped coils with a zoned support design. It’s not the most sophisticated zoned support design we’ve seen, but any extra support for the spine is nice. There are also a few layers of foam to make sure you get the bounce you expect from the hybrid without feeling any of the coils.

Unlike other luxury beds, this bed is only available in one firmness level. However, I don’t see that being a problem because it’s around a medium to medium-firm or six on our scale, so it works for just about anyone. One thing I need to mention about this bed is that though it’s called the Leesa Sapria Chill, it’s not the coolest bed we’ve tested. You can tell it’s cooling, and you’ll probably sleep a little cooler than normal, but it’s not the most impressive factor about this bed.

Our take: The WinkBed mattress is one of my favorite beds, thanks to the plush pillow top and great value. However, if you want a memory foam feel, look elsewhere.

How it sleeps: Hybrid beds strike a balance between durability and comfort. The coils and foam layers work together to ensure that the bed will support you over time. The WinkBed mattress is my top choice for the best luxury hybrid mattress. The puffy pillow top seriously feels like a cloud when I lie on it. I can tell it’s a hefty bed that will support me.

I also like that the WinkBed mattress is available in multiple firmness levels. Giving some customization goes a long way in making sure you can get the best sleep possible. When testing the firmness of the Luxury Firm model of the WinkBed with our Mattress Smasher 9000, it scored 5.8 out of 10. That’s a good choice for the average person who doesn’t want an extremely firm or soft bed.

I also like the value of the WinkBed mattress. Luxury mattresses are expensive; there’s no way around it. But WinkBed has managed to make a really solid bed for only $1,799 for a queen. Around sale time, I’ve seen that drop closer to $1,400. It’s definitely not a budget bed, but it’s luxury quality that’s closer to many people’s budget.

Runner-up: The Purple Rejuvenate mattress combines the iconic GelFlex grid with coils and foam layers. It’s a super comfortable mattress that exudes luxury. Unfortunately, it’s a really expensive bed at $5,495 for a queen.

Our take: With its golden embroidery and organic cotton cover, the Saatva Classic is an obvious choice at first glance. It’s thick, supportive and ideal for people who can afford to spend a little more.

How it sleeps: “The Saatva Classic is a truly luxurious innerspring mattress. I slept on the luxury firm model, which provided ample spinal support for me as a stomach sleeper with back pain. It has a more responsive feel, so it's easy to move around and switch positions. As someone who sleeps on the edge due to our bed-hogging cat, I never felt like I was falling off thanks to its strong edge support,” says sleep writer Aly Lopez.

I like the Saatva Classic because it has a traditional mattress feel. It’s s responsive and almost bouncy feel along with its pillow top. With an innerspring system and an additional layer of wrapped micro coils, this bed is serious about support. Not to mention, the zoned support memory foam layer makes sure your spine is supported. All of these elements together are why I think it’s the best luxury mattress for back pain. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a bed that balances such extreme support with a comfy pillow top.

The Saatva Classic mattress is a favorite among our testers because it lasts. It’s another bed that lets you choose your firmness, so you don’t have to settle for "good enough." You can select from Plush Soft, Luxury Firm and Firm. Our Mattress Smasher 9000 rated the Luxury Firm model 5.25 out of 10. I think that’s a safe bet for the average person who doesn’t have a strict firmness preference.

Runner-up: Saatva RX is another luxury bed from Saatva. This time, it’s designed specifically to alleviate back pain. However, it’s considerably softer than the Saatva Classic. I recommend it only to people looking for a truly soft bed.

Our take: The Aurora Luxe is the ultimate luxury mattress for hot sleepers. It’s the coolest bed I’ve ever tested and boasts a neutral feel that everyone will be happy with. However, it’s not the best choice for people who want a memory foam feel or a particularly firm mattress.

How it sleeps: The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is one of the most widely-accommodating mattresses out there. It all starts with the feel. I’d describe it as a neutral hybrid feel. It’s classic and comfortable without introducing any polarizing feelings like dense memory foam. You choose from three firmness levels: Soft, Medium and Firm. The only thing I’ll note here is that the firmest model isn’t actually that firm. We’ve found it to be somewhere around a medium firm. I think that’s actually a good thing for most people, though people who truly want a board for a bed should look elsewhere.

Besides the dependable hybrid construction, the main appeal of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is the GlacioTex cooling cover. This thing is actually cold, and you’ll feel it while you sleep. A lot of beds have a cooling cover, though it’s so slight that it’s lost in the layers of bedding. But not the Aurora Luxe. This bed is always my top recommendation for hot sleepers who want a luxury mattress.

Runner-up: The Tempur-Pedic Pro Breeze is another cooling mattress that will actually make a difference for hot sleepers. It’s a good choice for people who want traditional memory foam's dense, syrupy feel. You just have to pay a lot to get it.

Our take: Couples need a mattress that can accommodate different body types and sleeping positions. Few beds offer the comfort and perks of the Nest Sparrow mattress. That said, it’s not very firm, which could be a turnoff for some.

How it sleeps: The Nest Sparrow mattress is one of those hybrid beds that anyone can sleep on. It’s widely comfortable with a fluffy pillow top feel that has plenty of cushion. It reminds me of what you’d find in a fancy hotel. The Nest Sparrow is available in a Plush (medium-soft or 3), Medium (medium or 5) and Firm (medium-firm) model, so you can pick the firmness that best suits your needs. It’s particularly primed for couples because the king sizes allow you to split the firmnesses internally. So if you want the softest and our partner wants the firmness, you can do that.

One of the best parts about the Sparrow mattress you don’t see in other beds is that Nest has a Lifetime Renewal Exchange Program. This program allows you to swap out the foam layer if it gets too soft or starts to degrade. Nest sends the new layer for free. This could go a long way toward extending the life of your mattress, and it’s not something that most brands offer.

Runner-up: The Saatva Solaire is also great for couples because it allows you to adjust the firmness on each side. This is necessary for people who have different needs from their partners.

Our take: Side sleepers who want a high-quality, soft bed should check out the Helix Sunset Luxe. It offers a lot of support to balance out the pressure relief, meaning petite people don’t need to spend much to get this upgraded model.

How it sleeps: “I’m a huge fan of soft mattresses, and the Helix Sunset Luxe is my favorite. It has ultimate pressure relief, especially when lying on my side. Its pillow top cushions all of my pressure points, and I like that it doesn’t feel stiff and dense like traditional memory foam. I think this premium, soft pillow top bed will suit most side sleepers,” says Caroline Igo, sleep editor.

The Helix Sunset Luxe is the upgraded version of the core model that offers ample pressure relief. It has an almost cloud-like pillow top feel that’s on the neutral side of the foam spectrum. You won’t get the “sink-in” feel of traditional memory foam. While testing, we found it to be around a medium-soft or three out of 10 on our scale. There’s no denying this is a soft mattress made for side sleepers. Despite this bed being soft, it still has plenty of support thanks to the zoned support coils that make sure your spine stays in neutral alignment.

Runner-up: If you’re adventurous and want a bed designed for side sleepers, check out the Sonu Sleep System. It has removable pillows that allow you to fit your arm into the channel in the bed instead of pinning it to your body. The only thing is that it’s pretty expensive.

Our take: The Titan Plus Elite mattress provides the support and durability that heavy people need in their beds. It’s also reasonably priced for the luxury market.

How it sleeps: The Plus Elite is a new mattress from Titan that’s designed for heavier body types who want a luxury bed. Few beds will be quite as durable as this one, with the individually wrapped coils, micro coils and layers of foam. This bed has a cushy pillow top feel that we got a hint of memory foam from, but not enough to define it as the true feel of this bed. Even if you don’t like memory foam, you’ll mostly feel the comfortable pillow top.

We found it to be medium to medium-firm, or six on our firmness scale. That’s the sweet spot for firmness because anyone will get what they need from the bed. It offers enough pressure relief for side sleepers and enough support from the hefty construction for back sleepers. Unless you’re looking for a super soft or extremely firm bed, you’ll find the Titan Plus Elite bed comfortable.

Runner-up: The Helix Plus Elite is another great luxury mattress for heavy people. It’s a bit firmer than the Tian Plus Elite, but it still has that comfy pillow-top feel.

Our take: The Tempur-Pedic Luxe Breeze mattress combines the thick, syrupy feel of traditional memory foam with an icy cooling cover. Unfortunately, this luxury mattress has a very high price tag.

How it sleeps: Fans of dense memory foam that sucks you into the bed will love the Tempur-Pedic Luxe Breeze mattress. The second I got on this bed, I felt the memory foam slowly conform to my body like a hug. If you’ve laid on a Tempur-Pedic mattress, then you know the feeling I’m talking about. It’s the ultimate level of pressure relief.

With the Luxe Breeze mattress, you can choose between Soft, Medium Hybrid and Firm. While the medium level is a hybrid mattress (which I recommend for heavier folks), the coils don’t impact the bed's feel. It’s memory foam all the way. The softest model is around a medium-soft or three, the medium falls right in the middle of the scale, and the firmest is a medium-firm or seven.

If you’re a Tempur-Pedic fan, you know how expensive these beds are. The Luxe Breeze mattress is $5,599 for a queen, which is much more than most people want to spend. If you want a Tempur-Pedic but can’t afford the price tag of the Luxe Breeze, consider the Pro Breeze. It’s a hundred bucks cheaper at $4,099.

Runner up: The Saatva Contour5 mattress is a memory foam mattress with a traditional feel but a much lower price tag than Tempur-Pedic. It’s $2,999 for a queen.

Mattresses you should avoid

There are a ton of beds out there across a range of prices. If you’re shopping for a luxury mattress, it’s best to avoid budget options. While many are great, they typically lack the bells and whistles of luxury beds, like zoned support or temperature-regulating systems.

  • Allswell: Walmart's Allswell mattress is an ultra-budget hybrid bed. It’s supportive and comfortable, but nothing fancy.
  • Dreamfoam Doze: Both the Dreamfoam Doze and Dreamfoam hybrid mattresses are solid, cheap beds that are honestly more comfortable than I thought they’d be. However, they don’t have advanced features.
  • Bear Original: I recommend the Bear Original to people who want a basic memory foam mattress. It’s nothing fancy, but still a good value.

What to consider when shopping for a luxury mattress

Luxury mattresses are expensive. As such, it’s important to make sure you get the best bed for your money. Consider these factors when shopping around for your next bed to make your search a breeze.

Firmness and sleeping position

Firmness and sleeping position are the most important factors in determining whether or not you like a bed. Your sleeping position will determine how firm your bed needs to be to sleep comfortably. For the average person, shooting for the middle is a safe bet, though there are ideal firmnesses for each sleeping position.

  • Side sleepers need a bed with plenty of pressure relief to cushion their shoulders, hips and knees. Softer beds tend to do this best.
  • Back and stomach sleepers need a firm bed to keep their spine aligned at night by keeping their hips from sinking too far into the bed. Firmer beds are ideal for this type of sleeper, though remember that firmness is a scale, and you don’t have to get the firmest mattress you find.
  • Combo sleepers are the most versatile. I generally recommend medium beds for these folks, though it’s best to choose a firmness that aligns with the position you spend the most time in at night.

Construction and added features

The thing that makes luxury mattresses truly luxurious is the construction and additional features they have. These beds are made with high-quality materials that are made to last and often contain more layers than budget beds.

In some, you’ll also see added features in the beds, like zoned support, cooling technology and adjustable firmness levels. Here’s the thing about the special features: not everyone needs them. If you’re not a hot sleeper, you probably shouldn’t get a cooling bed because they’re more expensive. And if you don’t have back problems, you probably don’t need to spend more to get a mattress designed to alleviate pain. Before you start looking, decide what features you need from your bed.

Price

Yes, luxury mattresses are expensive, but there is still a price range within the luxury category. You can get a really nice luxury mattress for around $1,700 or spend up and get something $2,500 and beyond. When it comes to luxury beds, the range is huge. Defining your budget early on will help you hone in on what beds to consider.

How we test mattresses

CNET's mattress smasher 9000 and a bed

The Mattress Smasher 9000 getting ready to smash a bed and provide us with an objective firmness score.

Aly Lopez/CNET

CNET’s sleep team has spent years testing, researching and ripping open mattresses. At this point, we’ve collectively tested over 300 mattresses. Most of the testing happens in our 6,000-square-foot testing facility in Reno, Nevada. During that time, we’ve collected and compiled a ton of objective and subjective data about beds.

Our holistic approach includes people of different genders, body types and sleeping positions, allowing us to compile a well-rounded view of the bed we use to make recommendations for you.

Firmness

We use our team’s collective experience to rate the perceived firmness of each bed we test. This involves lying on the bed in multiple positions, sometimes for extended periods. We’ve had team members sleep on beds for months or even years to get a full picture of a bed.

We test every bed we review. In addition to our subjective experience, we use our proprietary Mattress Smasher 9000 to collect objective firmness metrics that complement our first-hand experience. We always test a bed before the MS9K smashes it; that way, our opinions are not colored by the data.

Motion isolation

CNET mattress expert Owen Poole tests motion isolation using a glass of water.

CNET mattress expert Owen Poole tests motion isolation using a glass of water.

Aly Lopez/CNET

Another essential testing factor is motion isolation, or how well a bed dampens movement across the surface. This is a huge factor if you sleep with another person or with pets. Generally, motion isolation is best in memory foam beds.

To test motion isolation, we get on the bed and have other people move around on it while we rate how much movement is transferred. We do this in every sleeping position. Another test we perform is placing a glass of water at the end of the bed and rolling toward and away from it. We take note of how much the water moves. If it spills, the bed doesn’t have the best motion isolation.

Edge support

Edge support describes how strong the perimeter of the bed is. Those with mobility issues or who favor sleeping on the edge of the bed need good edge support. To test this factor, we sit or lie on the edge of the bed and measure how much it caves in under our weight. If it feels like we might slide off, a bed receives a lower edge support score.

Temperature

The cooling section of the mattress industry is all shades of gray. Any brand can say its bed is cooling, though few truly are. This is where our established knowledge of the industry comes in. We know what cooling technology will actually regulate temperature, so we test our beds in temperature-controlled rooms.

Best luxury mattress FAQ

How much does a luxury mattress cost?

The average online bed costs somewhere between $800 and $1,200. However, luxury mattresses tend to start at $1,800 and can go as high as $5,000 and beyond. There are great beds for every budget, and remember that a high price point doesn’t automatically mean higher quality.

What is the lifespan of a high-quality mattress?

The average lifespan of a mattress is seven to 10 years. Since luxury mattresses are made with high-quality and durable materials, you can probably squeak out a few extra years. However, monitoring how you feel when you wake up when sleeping on an old bed is important. If you wake up tired or have a painful back, it might be time for a new bed.

What mattress is the most luxurious?

Our team has tested around 300 beds, including beds at every budget and construction. We found the most luxurious mattress for the average person to be the Lessa Sapria Chill. It’s widely appealing and seriously comfortable.

Other luxurious beds that we really love are the Tempur-Pedic Luxe Breeze for memory foam lovers, the Titan Plus Elite for heavy people and the Nest Sparrow for couples.
