Pros and Cons
Just when I thought Nectar was finished with its mattress lineup overhaul, the Nectar Ultra joins the party. This mattress doesn't fit neatly with the Nectar Classic, Premier and Luxe, but the Ultra has a few features not found on the others. It's also quite a bit more expensive. However, it's also the first Nectar mattress that fits the description of "luxury."

First impressions of the Nectar Ultra mattress
When the Nectar Ultra box arrived at our office, our whole team was confused, thinking we might have received it by mistake. Nectar had just remade its entire lineup and we'd finished testing the rest. We weren't expecting another bed.
After I unboxed the mattress, I could tell that the Ultra is meant to be the most luxurious of the Nectar beds, given its thickness. I also figured this out because the bed is cool to the touch, even more so than the Nectar Luxe.
It also took the mattress a little while to fully inflate and off-gas, which makes sense, considering it is an all-foam mattress with a very thick layer of memory foam as its main comfort layer.
Is the Nectar Ultra mattress right for you?
Anyone looking for a luxurious memory foam mattress with zoned support and cooling features should look at the Nectar Ultra. It isn't my favorite mattress in the luxury memory foam category, but it has a lot going for it. It comes in at a lower price than much of the competition, and it has generous policies, including an extended one-year trial period and a lifetime warranty.
Nectar Ultra mattress firmness and feel
Ultra mattress feel
The Nectar Ultra has a dense, memory foam feel, with little to no nuance. This means that when you first lie down on it, it will feel firm at first, but then you'll slowly start to sink into that top layer of memory foam, and it will conform to your body's shape.
One of the hallmarks of a classic memory foam like this is that it's slow to respond. Other mattresses that use coils and bouncier foams, like latex, move with you and return to their regular shape when you relieve pressure quickly.
The memory foam used on the Nectar Ultra is slow to respond and can actually deter you from tossing and turning at night, which I think is nice. I sleep on a Tempur-Pedic mattress right now and I usually wake up in the same position I fell asleep.
While I enjoy this type of feeling, others on our team say they feel "stuck" in the mattress and dislike the difficulty in trying to change their sleeping position.
Nectar beds are actually available in many Mattress Firm locations across the US so it might be worth checking out in person to know if you like this type of feel or not because it can be a bit divisive.
Ultra mattress firmness
Based on our testing of the rest of the Nectar lineup, the firmness profile of the Nectar Ultra is unexpected.
The Nectar Classic, Premier and Luxe have a sliding scale of firmness, with the Classic being the firmest, the Premier in the middle and the Luxe on the soft end.
Based on the previous three beds, I expected the Ultra to be even softer and more plush than the Luxe -- but we actually found it to be a flat medium, similar to the Premier.
Our Mattress Smasher 9000 testing device gave the Nectar Ultra a score of 6.1 out of 10, which is right on the edge of the medium range (4 to 6 out of 10). When we test on the MS9000, we place the pressure plate in the exact center of the bed -- and one of the features of the Nectar Ultra is that it has zoned support and is designed to be noticeably firmer in the center.
We also tested the lower third of the mattress, and it scored 5.5 out of 10, so not only is the zoned support legit, but it also means the bed is in the medium range across the mattress.
With this firmness profile, the Nectar Ultra should work well for all sleeping positions: back, stomach, side and combination.
Nectar Ultra mattress construction
The Nectar Ultra is a three-layer mattress with a support layer, a transition/zoned support layer and a top comfort layer of memory foam.
The support layer will depend on which model you get. We were able to test the foam model of the Nectar Ultra, but like all of the Nectar beds, it's also available in a hybrid coil model.
The differences between the coil models and foam models of the rest of the Nectar lineup are fairly significant. Firstly, we found the hybrid models to be softer across the board by up to two-and-a-half points on the mattress smasher (the foam Nectar Classic scored a 8.4 and the hybrid Nectar Classic scored a 6.1).
Secondly, the coil versions are more responsive and bouncy. I wouldn't say the coil versions change the feel so drastically it needs to be in a different category, but it is noticeable.
So the bottom layer of the Nectar Ultra is the support layer (coils or foam) and then above that there's a transition layer of zoned support foam. The middle third of this foam layer is noticeably firmer than the outer third, providing targeted support.
Above the transition layer is the main comfort layer, which is a 4-inch layer of memory foam to provide that classic, dense feel.
The Nectar Ultra has a strong cooling cover that is very cold to the touch and will aid with temperature regulation.
Nectar Ultra performance
Edge support
I found the edge support on the foam model Nectar Ultra to be just average when I tested it. There's nothing in the construction to help reinforce the edge, and the memory foam layer on top is so thick it can compress and lead to a roll-off sensation.
We haven't tested the hybrid model yet, but if the other Nectar Hybrids are any indication, the edge support will be much better on the hybrid thanks to the extra-thick gauge coils on the perimeter.
So, if edge support is a concern of yours, I would definitely suggest the hybrid.
Motion isolation
Motion isolation refers to how well the bed deadens the impact of movement on the mattress -- if you're a light sleeper who shares a mattress with someone who tosses and turns a lot, having good motion isolation is especially important.
This is the opposite story as edge support, with the foam model performing better than the hybrid model. Foam beds perform better at deadening the impact of tossing and turning than hybrids across the board.
So if you are a light sleeper who wakes up easily, the foam model will likely be the better choice.
Temperature regulation
I have mentioned the cooling nature of the Nectar Ultra a few times now and it's the best-performing Nectar mattress in this category. I think hot sleepers will enjoy the cooling cover on this mattress and it should help you avoid night sweats.

The Nectar Ultra is easily the most expensive bed in the Nectar lineup, which is known for being affordable. It's competing on price with high-end beds we rate highly, like the Tempur-Pedic Tempur Adapt, Casper Snow Hybrid and the Saatva Classic.
The Nectar Ultra will frequently be available with discounts or bundle deals that can include free pillows or a heavy discount on an adjustable base, so keep an eye for those deals.
Overall, I'd say the Nectar Ultra is a decent value but not quite as good of a value as the other Nectar beds like the Nectar Premier.
Nectar Ultra mattress policies
Free shipping
The Nectar Ultra will ship right to your door inside a box at no additional cost -- which is standard for most online mattresses.
Unboxing a mattress is an easy process, and it should only take 5 to 10 minutes. I always recommend unboxing it with someone else because beds get heavy and are difficult to move solo.
It may take up to 48 hours for the mattress to fully inflate and reach its proper firmness level. There may also be a bit of an odor right after unboxing a mattress, so keep that in mind.
365-night trial
All Nectar mattresses come with an extra-long trial period of 365 nights, compared to the usual standard of 100 nights. So you have quite a while to test it out and see if you like it.
It can take a month or longer for your body to adjust to a new mattress, no matter how well-suited it is to your sleeping preferences. The trial period begins the day the mattress is delivered, not when you actually start sleeping on it.
Return policy
At any point after the first 30 nights post-delivery you decide the Nectar Ultra mattress isn't for you for any reason, you can return it and get a refund. You just contact the company, and it will coordinate with a third party to pick up the mattress for you. The bed is then usually donated.
As of this writing, Nectar doesn't charge a return, transportation or any other type of fee to return a bed, so getting a Nectar mattress is virtually risk-free.
Warranty
All Nectar mattresses are backed by a Lifetime warranty, which is above and beyond the usual online mattress standard of 10 years.
Like pretty much any warranty that lasts longer than 10 years, this warranty is tiered and offers more protection in the first 10 years in comparison to the years after.
How does the Nectar Ultra compare to similar mattresses?
Nectar Ultra vs. Tempur Adapt
The Tempur Adapt is the base model mattress in the brand's Adapt line. It has a classic, dense memory foam feel and a cool-to-the-touch cover. It also comes with a free in-home setup and ships full size. Tempur Pedic is one of the most trusted brands in online beds, and I currently sleep on the Tempur Pro Breeze mattress.
The Nectar Ultra is more affordable. It has zoned support and stronger cooling properties, and its feel and firmness profile are nearly the same. Both beds are also available in a foam version and a hybrid version.
Nectar Ultra vs. Leesa Reserve Hybrid
The Leesa Reserve Hybrid is one of my favorite memory foam mattresses. It's super luxurious, great for hot sleepers, and available in three different firmness profiles, so it will work for all sleepers. It's a hybrid bed and not available in a foam model, but it's one of the best-performing hybrids we've tested at isolating cross-mattress motion.
The Leesa Reserve Hybrid is quite a bit more expensive than the Nectar Hybrid, though. I think it's a solid alternative for someone looking at the Leesa Reserve but who doesn't want to spend the money.
Final thoughts on the Nectar Ultra mattress
I think the Nectar Ultra fits seamlessly into the Nectar mattress lineup -- it's easily the most luxurious bed from Nectar and has features not found on the rest of the beds, like zoned support and enhanced cooling. It's slightly too expensive for me to get excited about it, though, and I think a lot of sleepers might be better served going with the Nectar Premier, which has a similar firmness profile for a much lower price.
However, for those seeking cooling features and zoned support who don't have the budget for more expensive premium memory foam beds like the Tempur Adapt, Pro Adapt, Saatva Contour5 or Leesa Reserve Hybrid, I think the Nectar Ultra is a solid option.
You might like the Nectar Ultra mattress if:
- You want a memory foam feel
- You enjoy a mattress with a medium profile
- You want a long trial period
- You want a cooling bed
You might not like the Nectar Ultra mattress if:
- You want an especially soft mattress
- You dislike the feel of memory foam
- You're shopping on a tight budget
Other mattresses from Nectar
Nectar Premier Memory Foam: This is the Nectar mattress that I think most people should probably get. It is a solid medium on our firmness scale (the hybrid model is softer), it has the same type of memory foam feel as the Ultra, and it is very affordable. It is missing the zoned support and cooling features of the Ultra, but not everyone wants or needs those in their mattress.
Nectar Luxe Memory Foam: This was previously the most high-end mattress available from Nectar before the release of the Ultra. This bed is very soft, among the softest beds we've ever tested, so memory foam lovers who sleep on their side will be interested in the Nectar Luxe. Compared to the Ultra, it's more affordable, but the Ultra has more cooling and zoned support.
