If you're a heavier individual, finding a mattress that properly supports your body can be challenging. I've personally experienced this struggle, weighing 250 lbs, which has affected both my sleep quality and how beds support me. Fortunately, Titan by Brooklyn Bedding has designed a mattress specifically to address this issue.

Titan, the online mattress sub-brand of Brooklyn Bedding, specializes in beds designed to support heavier individuals. Its latest release, the Titan Plus Elite, is the focus of this review. By the end, I'll explain why I consider it one of the best online mattresses for larger side sleepers.

First impressions of the Titan Plus Elite

This bed ships to you for free with standard bed-in-a-box delivery, just like the other Titan Plus mattresses. Once it's unboxed, you may want to give the bed some time to off-gas and fully inflate, but it should be ready to go the same day you receive it.

When this bed came to our office, my eyes were directed towards the cover. It has what you'd find in the Sedona Elite mattress, Brooklyn Bedding's ultimate cooling cover. As a hot sleeper, I was eager to try out this premium cover and see how well it dissipated body heat. The moment I lay on the mattress, I was surprised by its firmness and overall feel.

Titan Plus Elite mattress firmness and feel

What does the Titan Plus Elite feel like?

The feel of the Titan Plus Elite is familial to Titan's midtier mattress, the Titan Plus Luxe. Though the Titan Plus Elite has a luxurious pillow top, it still offers a slight sink-in sensation, similar to a memory foam mattress. Memory foam beds, like Tempur-Pedic beds, slowly sink in to cradle your body. The Titan Plus Elite certainly has hints of this memory foam quality but is more responsive. And the pillow top still provides plenty of support and pushback while you're lying on the bed.

The comfort of the Titan Plus Elite comes with a unique twist we don't often see in pillow-top beds at our mattress facility. It combines the classic plush feel of a traditional pillow top with a subtle touch of memory foam.

How firm is the Titan Plus Elite mattress?

brooklyn-bedding-titan-plus-elite-2024-sleepers-dp-8.jpg
Dillon Payne/CNET

This is what really surprised me in my first impressions of the bed. Our team rated this mattress as medium to medium-firm, leaning more toward the medium side of the firmness scale. Previous Titan beds tend to be firmer, making them ideal for heavier individuals. However, heavy side sleepers may prefer the Titan Plus Elite, as their weight will make it feel slightly softer, offering better comfort and support.

With its medium to medium-firm feel, this mattress is versatile enough to suit almost every type of sleeper. Medium firmness generally works well for combination sleepers, while back and stomach sleepers often prefer a firmer mattress for added support. If you're a side sleeper who likes a firmer bed, this mattress should fit the bill. Given this balanced position between two firmness levels, we believe it provides sufficient support for all sleeping positions.

Titan Plus Elite mattress construction

Dillon Payne/CNET

Since the Titan Plus Elite mattress is Titan's top-of-the-line mattress, its construction is different than the two other Titan beds. The materials have more specialized features for comfort and support. Here's what's going on inside the bed:

  1. On the bottom, you've got a thin layer of support foam. This provides the base for everything else to rest.
  2. This foundation layer is what sets this bed apart for big sleepers. It has 900 TitanCore steel coils, which are thicker and more durable than Brooklyn Bedding's standard coils, providing enhanced support for heavier individuals.
  3. Next is a transition layer of dense support foam to buffer between the support and comfort layers of the bed.
  4. After that comes a layer of micro coils and a layer of comfort foam. The micro coils allow even more support and comfort that you won't find on the Titan Plus Luxe model. This micro coil construction is what gives the bed its memory foam feel. The layers help with motion transfer and pressure relief, too.
  5. Rounding everything out is the bed's cooling pillow top. The plush, quilted pillow top has a cooling fiber fabric to dissipate heat and provide a more cooler sleeping surface.

Titan Plus Elite mattress performance

Motion isolation

The tufted mounds from the pillow-top design and the micro coils within the comfort insert perform exceptionally well when it comes to deadening motion. From our years of testing, we find dense memory foam beds usually perform well in this category. For example, the Leesa Reserve and TempurPedic Pro Breeze models are superior when it comes to motion isolation. And the Leesa Legend Chill has a similar micro coil design as the Titan Plus Elite. As far as we're concerned, we don't foresee anyone waking you up on the Titan Plus Elite if they toss and turn throughout the night.

Edge-to-edge support

This bed also performs well when it comes to supporting you along its edges. Thanks to its steel coils, the bed's perimeter holds up when you lie on its edge.

Temperature

The enhanced cooling pillow top is effective in keeping the bed at a cooling temperature. Even after putting a mattress cover and sheets on the bed, you still feel the cooling nature of the Titan Plus Elite's cover.

Durability

There is no lack of durability when it comes to the design of the Plus Elite. The coils used in this mattress are thicker gauge and made to withstand more weight than other Brooklyn Bedding mattresses. Its foam layers are also made of a denser material and are specialized for this type of mattress. Plus, the micro coils give it even more enhanced support over the Titan Plus Luxe mattress. These factors will likely allow the mattress to last, especially if you're a heavier person.

Who is the Titan Plus Elite mattress best for?

Dillon Payne/CNET

The Titan Plus Elite is designed to deliver a luxurious sleep experience. Here's who will benefit most from this mattress.

Sleeping position

Heavier side sleepers will find this mattress accommodating. For petite or average-sized individuals, it's better suited for combination sleepers. The cooling pillow top also makes it a great choice for those who tend to sleep warm at night.

Body type

This mattress provides support for all body types. It's one of three Titan models from Brooklyn Bedding, all designed for heavier individuals, though each varies in firmness.

Titan Plus Elite mattress pricing

Size Measurements (inches)Price
Twin 38x75 inches$1,648
Twin XL 38x80 inches$1,748
Full 54x75 inches$2,048
Short Queen 60x75 inches$2,398
Queen 60x80 inches$2,398
King 76x80 inches$2,648
Cal King 72x84 inches$2,648
RV King 72x80 inches$2,648

Personally, a queen-size mattress over $1,500 is a little steep for my wallet. However, when you consider the types of sturdier materials and comfort features like its pillow top, this bed isn't meant to be cheap. After a discount, a queen-sized Titan Plus Elite typically costs around $1,700 -- a competitive and reasonable price compared to other mattresses designed for larger body types.

Trial, shipping and warranty

Brooklyn Bedding offers pretty basic policies when it comes to shipping and warranties. Your bed will ship to you in a box for free, and once it's in your possession, you have a 120-night trial period to try it risk-free. If you happen not to like it within that timeframe, you can return it, but there will be a $90 removal fee. If you decide to keep it, you're backed by a 10-year limited warranty.

How does the Titan Plus Elite compare to other mattresses?

Titan Plus Elite vs. Big Fig

These two durable hybrid beds are the first that come to mind when people ask me which mattress is best for heavier individuals. The Big Fig mattress is one of the most marketable beds made for bigger bodies, hence its name. That said, Big Fig's construction doesn't include some of the features that the Titan Plus Elite offers. The Big Fig mattress doesn't have a tufted pillow top like the Plus Elite, which makes the bed feel slightly firmer when you lay on it. Both beds have a cooling cover, but the Titan Plus Elite's cooling cover is much more noticeable. Overall, the Big Fig mattress is the more budget-friendly choice and offers a firmer feel.

Titan Plus Elite vs. Helix Plus Elite

Both of these beds are manufactured in the 3Z Brands factory located in Phoenix, Arizona. The Helix mattress brand has a similar lineup of beds with its Helix Plus, Helix Plus Luxe and the Helix Plus Elite. There are similar materials in both beds, like the TitanCore coils. But the Helix Plus Elite offers a zoned-support design and edge-support coils, which the Titan Plus Elite does not have. Both beds have a cooling pillow top that works very well for hot sleepers. However, the Helix Plus Elite is firmer in comparison to the Titan Plus Elite. If you want a bed with superior support, a luxurious design, ultra-cooling features and cost isn't a concern, the Helix Plus Elite is the way to go.

The final verdict

For the past seven years, I've been on the hunt for the best mattress for heavier individuals. My key criteria? A balance of support and comfort without compromising durability. I've tested numerous hybrid beds, but the new Titan Plus Elite finally offers a solid solution for heavier side sleepers.

You might like the Titan Plus Elite mattress if:

  • You want a bed built for heavier individuals
  • You want a medium to medium-firm firmness option
  • You want a responsive pillow-top feel
  • You're a hot sleeper and want a cooling cover
  • You're in a relationship and can't decide on firmness

You might not like the Titan Plus Elite bed if:

  • You're looking for a firm mattress
  • You want a zoned-support design
  • You're on a strict budget

Titan Plus Elite mattress FAQs

Does the Titan Plus Elite use any fire retardants in the bed?

As stated previously in this article, the bed is manufactured in the 3Z Brands’ factory in Phoenix, Arizona. The mattress itself meets CertiPUR-US standards. There are no toxic chemicals or harmful adhesives, including fiberglass, in this mattress. Brooklyn Bedding does use fire retardant socks, made of a non-woven/silica/rayon/polyester/cotton blend.

What is the firmness of the Titan Plus Elite?

The Titan Plus Elite is a medium to medium-firm on our firmness scale. The brand also offers other Titan Plus models with different firmness levels if the Titan Plus Elite doesn’t match your preferred feel.

How long will the Titan Plus Elite mattress last?

Being a durable hybrid bed, the Titan Plus Elite should last you for at least the next seven to 10 years, if not much longer. Again, this mattress is built to withstand sleepers with higher BMIs. For a hybrid mattress, the Titan Plus Elite is plenty durable and should last the average sleeper at least 10 years. Remember, it's also backed by a 10-year warranty.
