Apple event photos: New iPhones and more

You probably heard: Apple has just unveiled new products at the Steve Jobs Theater on its campus in Cupertino, California.  Here are the highlights from the event.

2018 iPhones, Apple Watch 4 and more: Everything Apple is announcing in real-time

Tim Cook started the show by focusing on the update to the company's popular wearable, Apple Watch Series 4.

First, Tim Cook unveiled its new Apple Watch Series 4.

The corners are more rounded, and the screen is over 30% larger.

A customizable home screen will enable you to have your watch face suit your informational needs.  

Models will start at $399.

The series 4 will include "fall detection."

If you've fallen you'll get a prompt to call for emergency help if needed.  If the Watch detects that you haven't moved after 1 minute post-fall, it will initiate a call on your behalf and alert your chosen contacts of your location.

The series 4 can now detect low heart rate as well.

The feature that received the most applause in the crowd came in response to the electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) feature, which allows wearers to have a heart sensor on their wrists. 

Its new chip, the S4, will have the watch performing twice as fast. With the larger screen, you can have up to 8 shortcuts on the screen for apps.

 The speakers will now be 50 percent louder for phone calls and interacting with Siri.

It'll come in three colors for its aluminum finish, in silver, gold and space gray. The stainless steel versions have polished black and space black, as well as a new gold color.

The battery life boasts 18 hours, and outdoor workout time has increased to 6 hours, Apple said.

And it's big brother: the iPhone XS Max...

The new iPhone XS Max (pronounced "10-S", not "excess") has a 6.5-inch OLED HDR display.

The iPhone XS sports a 5.8-inch display and starts at $999 for 64GB model.  

The phone's new A12 Bionic chip, a 7 nanometer processor, promises to launch apps 30 percent faster than 2017 iPhones.

The A12 Bionic chip will also speed up Face ID and improve photos and videos with automatic edits, such as white balancing and red-eye reduction.

The new processor is claimed to launch apps 30 percent faster than 2017 iPhones. With their IP68 water-resistance rating they should be ok in two meters of water for up to 30 minutes.

Augmented Reality is a growing area of interest for Apple.

They described an app that can project 200 species of fish into your surroundings through the phone's AR abilities.

Gaming will be enhanced and the phone offers a wider stereo field than 2017 iPhones.

Your gaming IRL can also be enhanced if you set your phone up to record your basketball stats.

Multiplayer AR gaming was demonstrated... so this will be a thing now.

The updated camera system features dual camera 12-megapixel wide and telephoto lenses.

The camera's algorithms detect people's faces and bodies, and kick into instant red eye reduction. Smart HDR can identify highlights and find shadow detail.

Apple promises you'll get more from the camera than you did with the iPhone X, specifically because of the power of the A12 Bionic chip inside. 

Smart HDR will automatically pull details from shadows and highlights that could have been lost otherwise. 

A 7-megapixel front-facing camera will bring depth to portrait mode photos.

After shooting in Portrait Mode you'll be able to edit the depth of field, introducting computational photography into the iPhone's capabilities.

iPhone XS should last 30 minutes longer than iPhone X; iPhone XS Max claims 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone X.  The phones boast a 3D Touch pressure-sensitive screen and iOS 12.

The iPhone XS and XS Max boast Dual-SIM card support through e-SIM technology, which will be supported on an array of carriers.

In other news, Apple wants us to know that they are using 100% renewable energy. 

The giveback program ensures that you can send in any older device and they'll either get it to someone somewhere else in the world who can use it, or recycle the materials it is made from. 

Another iPhone was announced: the iPhone XR, which sports an aluminum body with glass back.

The iPhone XR will have a 6.1-inch LCD screen with 1,792x828 resolution and 326ppi (Retina display).

The XR will support FaceID and has the same True-Depth camera system as iPhone XS.

The battery life is said to be 1.5 hours more per day than the iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone XR has a single camera at 12-megapixels, with a wide-angle lens, with IOS.

The iPhone XR starts at $749 and will be offered in Blue, coral, yellow, white, black, Project Red. Storage options are 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB.

While concluding the event, Tim Cook mentioned that the HomePod smart speaker will have updates available September 17th, including Siri shortcuts for making calls, device location, and searching for songs by lyrics. Read about the news here.
