A package lockbox made for the future
Hyve founders Melissa Kieling and her son grew tired of packages getting stolen by porch pirates, something that has happened to about 1 in 6 of Americans. So they started a new venture called Hyve with a whole new kind of delivery box to stop package theft.
The Hyve smart home delivery pod packs every safety feature possible into a smart lockbox that sits by your door. It has a carbon-fiber tether to keep it in place, an anti-tamper siren, and a durable window so delivery people can still take photos for confirmation. The app allows you to do everything from give people access codes and get open alerts to arranging for easy software-based returns.
While a new wave of delivery boxes has risen to fight ongoing porch piracy, the Hyve pod is the most complete, thoughtful box we've seen for homeowners who get a lot of packages (or meal deliveries).
Video screens on smart locks
At CES 2025, companies asked, "What if we combined every front door security device into one?" The answer from companies like Lockly and TCL was a do-it-all video smart lock, which could become the go-to home security device in the coming years.
These devices can auto-lock doors, allow for remote openings and let you send passes to friends or family, like smart locks. They can also recognize humans with high-res cameras and let you talk through two-way audio like video doorbells. And they have built-in smart display capabilities so you can look right through the door at who's there without the need for a peephole or phone.
Lockly's version, the Vision Prestige, proved especially impressive with its touchscreen keypad, fingerprint detection and compatibility with Apple devices right from the box. At $500, it will also be very expensive when it launches later this year.
Video doorbells with their own displays
Video doorbells make a perfect pairing with smart displays that can show you a video live view of your front door with a command from Google or Alexa and let you talk through the display to whoever is there. SwitchBot took it a step forward at CES 2025 and combined the two into one kit.
The 2K-resolution SwitchBot Doorbell comes with its own 4.3-inch display that you can perch anywhere or mount to any wall in your house. Quick button presses (with large buttons ideal for aging-in-place users) let you see a live view, get person notifications, talk to who's at the door and more. You don't need to spend money on a more complicated, separate display, but you still get all the benefits.
User-friendly smart smoke detectors
Smart smoke detectors are often limited or so closely tied to security systems that they don't impress on their own. Ring and home fire safety brand Kidde teamed up at CES to announce a new partnership addressing these issues, and home fire alarms have never looked better.
Now, you can expect a new line of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors from Kidde with built-in Ring technology, working directly with the Ring security app without the need for any other hub, app or workaround. Users will receive direct phone alerts for both alarms and low battery warnings. Ring is also offering a $5 fire alarm subscription for live agents to monitor the detectors, far more affordable than a typical home security monitoring plan.
