OnePlus 7 Pro is big, blue and budget friendly

Chinese phone-maker OnePlus has a new offering that packs tons of features. Dubbed the OnePlus 7 Pro, it features high-end hardware and starts at just $670. Though it's the company's priciest phone to date, it's still notably less than the budget options of Samsung and Apple.

The OnePlus 7 Pro is the successor to last year's OnePlus 6T. It's a more premium version of the OnePlus 7, which won't be available in the US. There will be a 5G variant of the OnePlus 7 Pro that will be sold in the UK.

Most phones have a refresh rate of 60 frames per second. But because the OnePlus 7 Pro refreshes at 90 frames a second, things like scrolling through webpages and apps feels really brisk, like the phone has a bit of a spring in its step.   

You can switch between a 60Hz and 90Hz refresh rate. Compared to the previous OnePlus 6T, games such as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds look a bit more fluid and silky at 90Hz. The difference isn't necessarily night and day. But if you're a gamer, you'll definitely appreciate that extra clarity and smoothness.

The OnePlus 7 Pro isn't officially IP rated for water resistance. But after a series of water tests, the phone survived 30 minutes in a tank of tap water. It eventually died, however, after being submerged in a 3-foot chlorinated pool.

The phone runs Android 9.0 Pie and features screen recording and Zen Mode, which makes your phone inaccessible for 20-minute periods to curb phone usage.

The phone is bigger and heavier than most premium phones. The OnePlus 6T was already difficult to maneuver with one hand, and the OnePlus 7 Pro is now taller and heavier by 0.77-ounce.

The phone doesn't have a headphone jack, but it does have stereo speakers and a USB Type-C jack.

The handset has OnePlus' signature toggle button that lets you switch between silent and vibration modes.

Overall, the phone looks fantastic. The front-facing camera is inside the phone (which I'll talk about later), and the sides of the display spill to the edges, which is reminiscent of Samsung Galaxy phones.

Along with the 7 Pro, OnePlus is also launching a pair of Bluetooth earbuds, Bullets Wireless 2.

With such thin bezels, the viewing experience is immersive and truly seamless. The display is razor-sharp, and there's no cut-out tab, teardrop notch or hole-punch display.   

The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 855 chipset and a 4,000mAh battery.

The phone has an 8-megapixel ultrawide-angle camera, a 48-megapixel standard camera and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x zoom.   

With the wide-angle camera you can fit way more content in each frame, and the OnePlus 7 Pro takes great portrait shots.

One novel thing about the phone is its front-facing camera. It's embedded inside the phone and pops up out of the top.   

If you happen to drop the phone, the camera will quickly pop back inside. Oh, and the 16-megapixel camera can take portrait shots, too.

The phone's battery also charges fast. OnePlus' proprietary charging technology, Warp Charge, juiced up a fully drained OnePlus 7 Pro to 42% in only 15 minutes. And a full charge took about an hour and 20 minutes.

In addition to blue, the OnePlus 7 Pro comes in a limited-edition white almond color.

The OnePlus 7 Pro doesn't have a few things other competitors have. There's no wireless charging or an IP rating for water resistance. But you can still snag a 256GB model for just $700, which is still less than the Galaxy S10E, the Pixel 3 and the iPhone XR.
