Game Informer had been publishing magazines and online articles for over 30 years before it was summarily shut down by its old owner GameStop in 2024. Nearly a year later to the day, the venerable gaming publication announced its return to publishing both online coverage and its print magazine.
Over its tenure, Game Informer maintained a high bar of quality reporting on new games, outlasting nearly every other gaming-focused print magazine with monthly issues alongside its online coverage. Its closure was mourned by readers and games industry members alike, with developers citing their projects featured on the cover of a monthly volume of Game Informer as a career highlight. The publication makes its return at an exciting time as gamers and journalists await Nintendo's reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 on an upcoming April 2 Nintendo Direct.
After several coy teases on social media, the magazine's returning editor-in-chief Matt Miller announced Game Informer's revival on its website, the first post to go up in a year. In an extraordinarily rare move, all of the publication's staff, from editorial to production to video and more, have also joined the new iteration of the publication. According to Miller's post, things will pick back up right as they left off, with daily game coverage restarting and interim content going up that was written after the publication was shuttered.
Miller, executive editors Kyle Hilliard and Brian Shea and other members of Game Informer staff assured readers that, for all intents and purposes, the publication they know and love is back.
After being taken down following its closing, Game Informer's website is back up with its archives restored, and the team has published reviews from the period it was offline as well as a Best Games of 2024 list. "We didn't want this little gap in Game Informer history to mean that we didn't celebrate the year of 2024," Hilliard said in the video. "And we also just really missed arguing with each other."
The publication's new owner is Gunzilla Games, the studio and publisher behind titles like extraction shooter Off The Grid, which re-established the site and magazine under a new entity Game Informer Inc. As Gunzilla's blog post announcing the news reads, Game Informer will remain "completely editorially independent."
"We are proud to welcome the talented voices behind Game Informer in the Gunzilla Games family, and join their fight to preserve the heart of video game journalism in what has been a tumultuous time for the industry," Vlad Korolov, CEO and co-founder of Gunzilla Games, said in the blog post. "Its legacy spans over 33 years, the publication has had a dedicated readership since its inception and still holds a special place in the hearts of many players across multiple generations -- including us."
Game Informer hasn't specified when its magazine's print run will resume, and more intriguingly, which game will score its place on the first issue's cover. But Miller did note that "more robust" membership and subscription options will be revealed in the coming weeks, though fans can sign up for updates to come.
