After locking myself out of the house in the dead of winter this year, I realized it was time to consider keyless, secure entry using a smart lock. If you're reading this, my guess is you've also had this thought. You'll especially want to ensure that your home is completely secure if you plan on taking some spring or summer trips this year. And since you're entrusting your property to these locks, you don't necessarily want to cheap out, but you also don't want to overspend.

Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money.

Thankfully, we just spotted a great deal on smart locks from one of our favorite makers: Level. The Level Lock Plus is currently $40 off at Amazon, reducing the price to just $146 -- a new low.

In the best smart locks roundup, our reviews team named the Level Smart Lock Plus the best invisible smart lock. Essentially, it looks just like a regular deadbolt. It's even designed to fit the existing deadbolt lock opening in most standard entry doors to allow keyless entry. It includes app support, Apple Home/Home Key support and a contactless keycard. In addition, a traditional key can still be used.

You can unlock it via the app or sync it with other smart home systems such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home. Just tap your iPhone or Apple Watch and it unlocks. You won't have to worry about locking yourself out of your house again -- although you'll want to remember your phone.

This smart lock's biggest appeal is that it is battery-operated, so installation is a DIY job and doesn't require an electrician or wiring. That means you can probably have it installed within an hour or so of its arrival on your doorstep.

Why this deal matters

The Level Lock Plus was highly rated by our reviews team. The lack of fingerprint entry is one of its only flaws. For the money and ease of use, it's a fantastic way to transition from regular keys to keyless entry. And since you'll likely need more than one to accommodate every entry, snapping the smart lock up at any discount is a good idea. A $40 discount reduces the lock to a record low.
